Oredocker Project School Enrollment Process
For Spring Semester, 2016
There are a handful of openings at OPS at each grade level for the spring semester. If interested contact Lead Teacher Laura Comer at OPS. (lcomer@ashland.k12.wi.us)
For the 2016-2017 School year:
Parents will enroll their children by completing an Oredocker Project School application form. If the number of applicants exceeds available seats, a lottery will be employed. The names of students on the waiting list will be recorded in the order in which they were drawn.
Currently enrolled Oredocker Project School students are automatically re-enrolled and do not have to reapply each year. Siblings of students who will be attending OPS, children of OPS staff, and children of founding governance council members will receive enrollment preference and will be exempt from the lottery for the next school year, provided an application is submitted by the final Monday in January.
If two or more siblings from the same family wish to enroll in the Oredocker Project School, a separate application must be submitted for each child. In the event of a lottery, there are special rules for siblings (see lottery protocol below).
Oredocker Project School has two enrollment periods. The first enrollment period is for in-district students only and opens on January 4th, and closes on the final Monday in January at 4:00 p.m. If openings remain in the school, the second enrollment period begins February 1st and closes on the final Monday in February at 4:00 p.m. The second enrollment period is open to out-of-district students who have been accepted as open-enrolled students as well as in-district students. Any application received after the second enrollment period will be placed on the waiting list in the order it was received.
Ashland Elementary Charter School (AECS) and Oredocker Project School (OPS) are considered separate schools by the State of Wisconsin. Therefore, current AECS students, and their siblings, cannot be given preference in the OPS application process, lotteries, or waiting lists.
All students in the district are welcome to apply. Out of district students must be accepted as open-enrolled by the School District of Ashland before they can enroll in OPS. Special needs of students will be met according to the goals of their IEPs. The School District of Ashland will provide needed special education services as appropriate.
Lottery Protocol:
• A lottery is required if during either of the enrollment periods more students apply than the number of seats available in a particular grade.
• If, during the first enrollment period, more students apply than the number of available openings, one lottery will be held and a second enrollment period will not be offered.
• If a lottery is not required for the first enrollment period, all students who apply during the first enrollment period will have a guaranteed place in the school and will be exempted from the lottery at the end of the second enrollment period.
• If a lottery is required during either enrollment period it will be held within 1 week following the end of the enrollment period.
• Parents are allowed to attend the lottery; however, it is not recommended that children attend.
• Enrollment Confirmation Notices and Wait List Notices will be mailed immediately following the lottery.
• If a family misses the enrollment periods but would still like to have their child attend the Oredocker Project School, admittance will depend on any remaining available openings.
• The lottery will be videotaped and kept on file for one calendar year.
• Each application will have a numbered ticket attached to it; a duplicate ticket will be placed in a drum or similar container.
• If the number of students wanting a seat at a particular grade does not exceed the number of allotted seats, no lottery will be held for that grade, and those seats will remain open. If any of these accepted students has a sibling applicant, the sibling will receive a seat before the lottery is conducted for the corresponding grade.
• The Superintendent, one of the building principals, or the Charter Council president will draw numbers from the drum or similar container and the names of the students will be written down in order, until the maximum is reached.
• Numbers will then be drawn to form a waiting list. The names of the students will be recorded for the waiting list in the order that they are drawn.
• Waiting lists will not be carried over from year to year. Families on the waiting list must reapply every year, and are not given any preference based on previous waiting-list position.
Open Seat Protocol
• If the second enrollment deadline passes, and open seats remain in a particular grade, students will be enrolled in the OPS in the order their applications are received.
• If seats open up after the lotteries, students will be called from the waiting list in the order they were placed.
• Families will either accept the open seat or decline it. By declining the seat, the student is removed from the waiting list.
• Students may enroll and attend OPS at any point during the school year as space permits in accordance with these guidelines.
